A company based outside of the UK looking to expand into the UK.
The expansion worker route is a route which enables an overseas company that has been established for a minimum of three years to expand into the UK by creating a UK ‘footprint’ which could usually involve registering the company and either opening a UK bank account or another means which shows intention to move into the UK. The company then obtains an expansion worker licence which would enable the company to sponsor up to five workers to come to the UK to set up the UK branch or subsidiary of the overseas company.
The advantage of this route is that it is one of very few that don’t require English language on first arrival in the UK, however, the visa is only for a year, if it’s the company’s intention to keep the employees in the UK, they will be able to extend their one year visa for one further year after which they would need to switch to skilled worker and for this, the employee will need English.
The route works as a replacement to the old ‘sole representative visa’ which is no longer open to new applicants.
Alternatively, a person can arrange for a company to be set up in the UK and sponsor themselves to be workers in the UK. The company would need to sponsor the worker in a senior role, usually as director. The worker would also need to speak English to level B1. The UK company would need a British or settled employee in order to manage the Sponsorship licence in the UK.
